Oxytocin
The love hormone
Quickstart – Key Points
Oxytocin is a peptide hormone (nonapeptide) known for its role in social bonding and behavior.
In research settings, synthetic oxytocin is used to study effects on partner relationships, stress, anxiety, and social cognition.
Oxytocin in 10 mg format is presented as a lyophilized powder for research, thus requiring reconstitution before use.
This protocol compiles guidelines on dosage, administration, and storage.
- Reconstitution: Add 3.0 mL of bacteriostatic water → approximate concentration of 3.33 mg/mL.
- Typical daily range: 100–500 mcg once daily (progressive titration).
- Easy measurement: At 3.33 mg/mL, 1 unit = 0.01 mL ≈ 33.3 mcg on a U-100 syringe.
- Storage: Lyophilized: freeze at −20 °C or refrigerate at 2–8 °C; after reconstitution, keep at 2–8 °C for 28–30 days.
Dosage and Reconstitution Guide
Educational guide for reconstitution and daily dosing.
Standard / gradual approach (3 mL = ~3.33 mg/mL)
- Weeks 1–2: 100 mcg → 3 units (0.03 mL)
- Weeks 3–4: 200 mcg → 6 units (0.06 mL)
- Weeks 5–6: 300 mcg → 9 units (0.09 mL)
- Weeks 7–8: 400 mcg → 12 units (0.12 mL)
- Weeks 9–12: 500 mcg → 15 units (0.15 mL)
Frequency: Subcutaneous injection once daily. This dilution allows practical measurements with an insulin syringe.
For small doses, 30 or 50-unit syringes can be used for greater precision.
Reconstitution Steps
- Draw 3.0 mL of bacteriostatic water with a sterile syringe.
- Inject slowly down the side of the vial; avoid foaming.
- Gently swirl until dissolved (do not shake).
- Label and refrigerate at 2–8 °C, protected from light.

Required Supplies
Plan based on a daily 8–16 week protocol with progressive titration.
Peptide viales (Wait, viales -> vials) (Oxytocin, 10 mg):
- 8 weeks ≈ 3 vials
- 12 weeks ≈ 5 vials
- 16 weeks ≈ 6 vials
Bacteriostatic water (10 mL):
- 8 weeks: 9 mL → 1 bottle
- 12 weeks: 15 mL → 2 bottles
- 16 weeks: 18 mL → 2 bottles
Protocol Summary
Objective: Explore the effects of oxytocin on partner relationships, social bonding, stress reduction, and metabolism.
Duration: 8–12 weeks (optional up to 16 weeks).
Dose range: 100–500 mcg daily with gradual titration.
Reconstitution: 3.0 mL per 10 mg vial (~3.33 mg/mL).
Storage: Lyophilized frozen or refrigerated; reconstituted refrigerated for up to 28–30 days.
Dosing Protocol
Start: 100 mcg daily for 2 weeks.
Progression: increase to 200 mcg (weeks 3–4).
Titration: increase by ~100 mcg every 2 weeks based on tolerance.
Goal: 500 mcg daily in weeks 9–12.
Frequency: Once daily (subcutaneous).
Duration: 8–12 weeks; optional up to 16.
Schedule: Any consistent time; effects tend to be acute per dose.
Storage Instructions
Reconstituted: 2–8 °C; stable up to 28–30 days; mark date and discard after 4 weeks.
Can be divided into aliquots and frozen; avoid repeated cycles.
Leave at room temperature before opening to avoid condensation.
How it works
Oxytocin acts by binding to specific receptors (OXTR) present in the nervous system and peripheral tissues. In the brain, it functions as a neuromodulator, influencing regions related to emotion and social behavior. Its activation can increase signals related to trust and social connection, in addition to reducing the stress response.
Potential Benefits and Side Effects
Social and Behavioral Effects:
- Improves intimate relationships with partner
- Increased trust and social bonding
- Reduction of social anxiety
Psychological Effects:
- Possible support for anxiety, stress or mood
Metabolism:
- Possible appetite reduction
- Improvement in fat use for energy
Pain and Inflammation:
- Possible analgesic effect
- Support in recovery
Generally well tolerated in studies, with a safety profile similar to placebo in many short-term applications.
Lifestyle Factors
- Maintain a balanced diet.
- Perform regular physical activity.
